  • The Sourcing and Purchasing Manager is responsible for organising the purchase of all items relating to the production of shoes at JL & Co. Key aspects of the role are to develop supplier relationships to continually enhance the service we receive, with a particular reference to price, quality, delivery, legislative compliance, product testing, reliability, and access to innovation. You will also control stock levels in line with current and anticipated production demands.

Reporting to the Site Director, the Sourcing and Purchasing Manager will lead and participate in the below: Manage the Sourcing and Purchasing team of 3, including a Leather Buyer, Stock Controller and a S&P Assistant.Work with the Product Development Director at development stage, providing leathers/components from reliable suppliers.Manage the purchase of all production items including upper leather, lining leather, soles, heels, insoles, buckles, etc, based on data from the Company’s ERP system, and in liaison with the Planning and Production functions.Purchasing to be made in accordance with production requirements, taking into account current/anticipated orders, stock levels, usage rates, and supplier lead-times.Monitor, and in specific cases directly manage the purchase of bought-in finished products (non-welted shoes, rubber over-shoes, belts, shoe trees etc) from suppliers.Agree, control and maintain supplier lead-times.Establish a purchasing contractual framework with suppliers of critical/strategic items such as leather, heels, and bought-in goods.For all new purchases, establish the best price by negotiating, including multiple quotations and tenders where appropriate.Agree price by requiring an ‘open book’ costing from new suppliers of bought-in goods.In collaboration with the Footwear Engineering Manager, agree appropriate testing protocols for all purchases, including required supplier QC checks, internal testing at JL & Co, and independent third-party testing where required.Define the legislative requirements for chemical compliance on goods we purchase. Establish and maintain a compliance file for all relevant products, to include: compliance letters from suppliers on REACH as well as banned substances; results of tests carried out by or on behalf of suppliers, or by JL & Co.Maintain a good understanding of the market, ensuring the wider management team are made aware of relevant opportunities and/or threats. These could include change in prices, or availability of components. Specifically understand the impact of sourcing activities on financial measures such as cash-flow, costs, margin, as well as on commercial indicators such as delivery, service, and reliability.Update and maintain the Risk Analysis Matrix of relevant suppliers in accordance with Hermes rules.Ensure compliance with Hermes Group and JL & Co policies and procedures, specifically Purchasing policies covering such aspects as anti-bribery & corruption and anti-money laundering. Evolve and improve the Company’s performance against Internal Audit requirements as pertains to Purchasing.As part of the Northampton management team you will attend daily and monthly site meetings covering all aspects of the business; you will have direct involvement in subjects related to production, planning and customer service, such as raw material delays, shortages or quality issues.Work cooperatively with the John Lobb Bespoke workshop in Paris on matters such as procurement and development.

  • Qualities and skills expected: Strong demonstratable experience in a purchasing/sourcing role is essentialExperience within a shoe, leather or related industry is advantageousWould ideally have technical abilities to specify QC and legislation-based testing of leather and components.Experience in managing an experienced and senior teamExceptional organizational skills, with great attention to detailA mature and professional approach to both internal and external partiesFlexible approach to work with the understanding this role will be required to travel within Europe on a regular basisAbility to build strong relationships and excellent communication skillsConfident in presenting reports, proposals etc to a senior audienceAbility to speak French and/or Italian would be beneficial but not essentialA good understanding of Microsoft office, plus the willingness to learn internal systemsHaving a spirit of co-operation within and between departments; ability to create a friendly environment
